Overview

Lignum Vitae in this sense is the wood of Bulnesia sarmientoi, a slow-growing tree of the semi-arid Gran Chaco spanning Paraguay, northern Argentina, and Bolivia. It is very closely related to and widely sold alongside the true lignum vitae of the genus Guaiacum, and shares the same defining traits: extreme density, a naturally waxy, self-lubricating character, and exceptional hardness. In the trade it is most often called Verawood or Argentine lignum vitae, and it has become the common substitute as the classic Guaiacum woods have grown scarce.

At a glance this wood is heavy, oily to the touch, and strongly figured. The sample shows the hallmark look of the species: bold, regular striping that alternates light golden-tan bands with dark brown to near-black layers. It sinks in water, feels waxy rather than dry, and carries a faint sweet, resinous scent when freshly cut.

Characteristics

The heartwood ranges from olive to a deep golden-brown, and in strongly striped stock like this sample it presents as light golden-tan bands alternating with dark brown or blackish layers, giving a dramatic, regular striped figure. A narrow band of pale yellow sapwood is sharply demarcated from the heartwood. Freshly worked surfaces often show a greenish cast that mellows to brown with light exposure. The grain is typically interlocked, the texture very fine and uniform, and the surface takes a naturally high, almost waxy luster.

The wood is exceptionally dense, with an air-dry specific gravity near 1.1 to 1.2, so it sinks readily in water. Its Janka hardness of roughly 4,500 lbf places it among the hardest commercial timbers on Earth. Natural durability is very high: the heartwood is rated durable to very durable, highly resistant to decay, insects, and marine borers, and its abundant natural oils give it excellent resistance to wear and moisture. Those same oils make it effectively self-lubricating, the property that historically made lignum vitae so valuable.

Common Uses

Historically, lignum vitae's self-lubricating oiliness and toughness made it the wood of choice for heavy-duty bearing and wear applications: bushings and stern-tube bearings for ship propeller shafts, pulley sheaves, deadeyes, mallet heads, and other components that had to run under load with little or no added lubrication. Bowling balls, pestles, and tool handles were traditional uses that exploited its density and impact resistance.

Today it is prized for turning, small decorative objects, chess pieces, knife scales, pens, mallets, and specialty items where its weight, hardness, and striking striped figure are assets. It remains a favorite for replacement bearings and bushings in machinery and clocks, and in restoration work where an authentic self-lubricating wood bearing is called for.

Working & Finishing

This is a demanding wood to work. Its extreme density, interlocked grain, and heavy oil content dull cutting edges quickly, strain machinery, and resist hand tools; sharp, robust tooling and slow, patient feed rates are essential. It turns superbly, taking crisp detail and a fine natural polish straight off the tool, but sawing and planing are hard going and interlocked grain can tear out.

The natural oils interfere with gluing, so surfaces should be freshly machined and wiped with solvent before bonding, and film finishes may struggle to adhere; many woodworkers simply buff the wood to its own waxy sheen. It is very slow to dry and prone to checking, so seasoning must be gradual.

Health cautions apply: Bulnesia dust and the wood's oils have been reported to cause skin irritation and respiratory or sensitization reactions in some workers, and the fine, oily dust is an irritant. Use dust extraction and a respirator, and treat it as a sensitizer until you know your own tolerance.

Value & Availability

Availability is limited and prices are high. The wood is typically sold in small turning blanks, spindles, pen blanks, and short boards rather than wide lumber, and cost sits at the premium exotic end of the market on account of scarcity and slow growth.

Sustainability is a genuine concern. Bulnesia sarmientoi is listed on CITES Appendix II, so international trade requires permits, and the species is under pressure from Chaco deforestation and overharvest. Buyers should seek documented, permit-backed stock and, where possible, verified legal or certified sources. The closely related true lignum vitae (Guaiacum) is even more restricted, with Guaiacum sanctum and G. officinale also CITES-listed, so both the substitute and the original carry regulatory obligations.
