How to Identify White Oak

Start at the end grain with a hand lens. White Oak is ring-porous, so each growth ring opens with a band of large earlywood pores. The decisive test: in White Oak those earlywood pores are plugged with tyloses — shiny, foamy-looking membranes that fill the vessels — so you cannot blow air or draw liquid through the end grain. If a length of end grain lets you blow bubbles through it, you have Red Oak, not White. The latewood pores in White Oak are numerous and arranged in radial, flame-like patterns.
Look at the rays. White Oak has tall, wide medullary rays that produce the long, dramatic silvery ray fleck seen on quartersawn faces (as on this sample), often measuring well over an inch. On flatsawn faces the rays appear as short brown flecks. Red Oak rays are shorter, giving smaller fleck. The prominent, closely spaced grain lines from the ring-porous structure are obvious even to the naked eye.
Judge color and weight. White Oak heartwood is light tan to olive-tinged medium brown; sapwood is nearly white. It reads warmer and more neutral than Red Oak's pinkish/rusty cast. It is heavy and dense in the hand — clearly a hard, weighty wood, not a light one. Freshly cut or wetted oak has a faintly sour, tannic, vinegary scent, and touching wet oak with steel wool will quickly raise a blue-black stain — a quick tannin confirmation.
Watch for the ebonized trap. A jet-black sample like the dark portion here is not a different species — it is fumed, ebonized, or bog-stained oak. Look past the surface color to the pore structure and ray fleck, which survive the darkening and still read as oak.
Common look-alikes: Red Oak (open pores, blow-through end grain, pinker, shorter fleck), White Ash (ring-porous and similar grain lines but vessels are open, rays are faint/invisible, and it lacks oak's big fleck), and American Chestnut (ring-porous like oak but with essentially no visible rays/fleck and a lighter weight). The presence of bold ray fleck combined with sealed pores is what pins the wood to White Oak.
