Overview
Douglas fir is the wood of Pseudotsuga menziesii, a very large, fast-growing evergreen conifer of western North America. Despite its common name it is not a true fir (Abies) but its own genus, Pseudotsuga — the 'false hemlock' — and is more closely related to the hemlocks and spruces than to the firs it is named after. The coastal form grows into one of the tallest trees on Earth, and its long, clear, straight logs make it the dominant structural softwood of the Pacific Northwest.

Characteristics
The sapwood is pale, cream to whitish, and the heartwood ranges from light yellow-tan to a warmer orange- or reddish-brown, deepening with age. The most distinctive visual feature is the growth ring: a strong contrast between the light, soft earlywood and the dense, darker latewood produces the bold concentric banding and the pronounced, sometimes 'wild' figure on flat-sawn faces seen on this sample. The grain is typically straight, the texture medium and somewhat uneven because of that earlywood/latewood difference, and the wood has a low to moderate luster.

Douglas fir is first and foremost a structural timber. It is the mainstay of dimensional framing lumber, posts, beams, joists, rafters, and heavy timber construction across North America, and it is the leading species in North American softwood plywood and laminated veneer products. Glulam beams and engineered timbers frequently rely on it for its strength and stiffness.
Beyond framing, its clear vertical-grain stock is valued for flooring, stairs, interior trim, doors, windows, and paneling, where the tight quarter-sawn lines are attractive. It is used for boatbuilding, timber-frame joinery, industrial flooring, cooperage, tanks, and railway and marine work, and reclaimed old-growth Douglas fir — dense, tight-ringed beams salvaged from old buildings — is popular for feature flooring, furniture, and exposed structural elements. It also turns and works into utilitarian objects, though it is not a traditional cabinet or instrument wood.
Working & Finishing
Douglas fir works reasonably well with hand and machine tools, but the sharp contrast between soft earlywood and hard latewood affects the result. Tools must be kept keen: dull edges crush the soft bands and skip over the hard ones, leaving a ridged or fuzzy surface, and the hard latewood dulls cutting edges faster than most softwoods. It planes and saws cleanly with sharp tooling, and it glues well.
Nailing and screwing can split the wood near ends and along the hard latewood, so pre-boring is wise. Finishing calls for care: the dense latewood absorbs stain far less than the porous earlywood, so pigment stains tend to accentuate the ring pattern and can look blotchy; many finishers prefer clear or natural finishes that let the grain speak. The wood also tends to raise a splintery grain, so surface prep matters.
Douglas fir is not classed as a toxic wood, but its dust is a recognized respiratory irritant and sensitizer that can provoke asthma-like reactions and dermatitis in some workers; splinters can also cause skin reactions. As with all wood dust, use effective extraction and a mask. There are no CITES or endangered-species concerns — Douglas fir is abundant and widely farmed.
Value & Availability
Douglas fir is abundant, commercially farmed on a huge scale, and inexpensive as construction lumber — it is one of the cheapest and most available structural softwoods in North America, sold in every lumberyard as framing stock. Clear, knot-free, vertical-grain grades cost considerably more and are sought for flooring, trim, and joinery, and genuine old-growth or reclaimed tight-ring material commands a premium for its density and appearance.
The species is not CITES-listed and is not threatened; it is a fast-growing plantation and managed-forest staple, and FSC-certified Douglas fir is readily available. It is native to western North America but has also been planted widely in Europe and elsewhere as a timber crop, so supply is secure and sustainable.
